Today we travel back to the days when Lincoln was both a thriving inland port and centre of heavy industry, the area to the east of Thorn Bridge was very different to today. South of the River Witham was factories, foundries and warehouses, while north of the river was a mass of terraced streets where the workers in those factories lived.
The old photo here looking along Waterside South is undated, but must be later than the mid 1960s because you can see Shuttleworth House in the distance. On the right is one of the iconic warehouses of the south bank, Barkers oil and seed mill. Locals of a certain age like me will remember the rich sweet smell of Barkers that pervaded that area of town.
I believe that the buildings have been mainly converted into apartments, but the shells are fundamentally unchanged, except for the overhanging boxes that housed the hoists for loading and unloading barges on the river.
Travel back in time on Waterside South, Lincoln.
