The Porto Alegre Public Market is a supply center in the heart of the city.
Inaugurated in 1869, on the city's first landfill, it has 103 establishments with a differentiated mix of activities.
The Public Market also acts as a space for cultural and community events in the city.
Between 1841 and 1842, Porto Alegre still did not have a central market, with commerce being distributed among several small establishments. A company was then formed for the construction of a suitable building, located in the former Praça do Paraíso, in the currently wooded area of Praça XV de Novembro. This first Public Market had a quadrangular plan, in brick masonry and with an iron gate, being ready in 1844 and having to concentrate all the meat trade in the city. In 1845, its external plastering and whitewashing was hired.
In 1845, discussions began for the construction of a new, larger building, a new project was presented only in 1861, but the design was substantially changed with the expansion of dimensions and the addition of turrets in the corners. The project - with its adaptations - had its cornerstone laid on August 29, 1864. The inauguration took place on October 3, 1869, and access to the population was granted on January 1 of the following year. The work cost the public coffers the sum of 246 contos de réis, quite high for the time.
In 1871 the inner courtyard was paved, and wooded in 1873. In 1886 24 cottages were installed in place of the trees. An expansion project was prepared, building a second floor to house commercial and industrial offices and public offices. In 1912, still under construction, a great fire broke out that destroyed all the cottages in the inner area. The second floor was completed in 1913, and new cottages, now made of metal, as well as a cold room, were delivered in 1915.
The market suffered from the city's floods, especially the 1941 flood, and new fires in 1976 and 1979.
The building, in an eclectic style with a strong neoclassical influence, was listed in 1979.
In 1990, the city administration organized a multidisciplinary team to develop a Restoration Project, in which the following objectives were clear:
Restoration of the aesthetic quality of the building;
Optimization of its supply potential;
Valuing spaces for sociability.
The renovation created a modern steel and glass structure to cover the large area of the inner courtyard, recovered the visual perception of the arcades, rescued the internal circulations, created new living spaces and implemented infrastructure networks compatible with the functioning of the Market. A new roof was built that allowed the integration between the ground floor and the second floor. On the second floor, where previously there were offices and public offices, there are currently several establishments such as restaurants, snack bars, etc.
