The 1986 World Cup final between Argentina and West Germany was a highly anticipated match that took place on June 29th at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Argentina, led by the legendary Diego Maradona, had been in scintillating form throughout the tournament and were looking to secure their second World Cup title. West Germany, meanwhile, were aiming to win their third World Cup and had a talented squad that included players such as Lothar Matthaus and Andreas Brehme.
The match got off to a controversial start when Maradona scored his infamous "Hand of God" goal in the 51st minute, punching the ball into the net past West Germany goalkeeper Harald Schumacher. Despite protests from the German players, the goal stood and Argentina took a 1-0 lead. However, just four minutes later, Maradona scored what is widely regarded as one of the greatest goals in World Cup history, dribbling past five German players before slotting the ball past Schumacher to make it 2-0.
West Germany fought hard to get back into the match and pulled a goal back through Klaus Fischer in the 74th minute. However, Argentina held on for a famous victory, with Jorge Burruchaga scoring a third goal in the 83rd minute to seal the win. Maradona was named man of the match and went on to be named player of the tournament, cementing his status as one of the greatest footballers of all time. The 1986 World Cup final remains a memorable moment in football history and is remembered as one of Argentina's greatest sporting achievements.
