17 people were killed in Syria's Tartous province on December 25 after clashes broke out between rebel security forces and pro-Assad supporters. The clashes occurred when Syrian rebel security forces attempted to arrest an officer who had worked in the “notorious” Saydnaya prison during Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 14 members of the “General Security Force” of Syria’s new authorities were killed, along with “three armed men” in Khirbet al-Maaza. The Syrian Interior Ministry said that the security personnel were killed in a “treacherous ambush” while carrying out their duty.
