Here’s your unemployment update for Friday, February 19th, 2021
Many Americans will get an unwelcome surprise this tax season but the IRS says its here to help.
Millions of workers have collected jobless benefits and they must pay taxes on that aid, but criminals have stolen identies in record numbers to collect benefits in others names.
Individuals who receive a 1099- G tax form but didn’t collect unemployment benefits may have fallen prey.
Unfortunately, the victim, not the con artist, is the one who’ll get the tax notice.
The IRS is trying to avert confusion and panic around fraud.
It launched a website Thursday for victims of unemployment- related identity theft.
Up next, Georgia’s state labor department has released numbers that indicate the state is doing a better job of handling the flood of claims for unemployment benefits.
Kersha Cartwright, the department spokeswomen, “Although roughly 80,000 Georgians who have filed claims are waiting to see if they are eligible for benefits, the Georgia Department of Labor now handles about 1,500 of those reviews a day.”
She also added that in August, the department could do only 900 reviews a day.
As we all know, states have been faced with criticism for being slow to handle claims.
“A recent study by the U.S. Department of Labor found that 43% of Georgians applying for benefits received benefits within a week if no additional review was needed compared to the national average of 29%.”
While the state department is nowhere near perfect, it is reassuring that they are trying their hardest to help their residents who rely on this department.
And finally, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment will begin to roll out Phase Two of the federal unemployment benefits on Saturday.
That will allow claimants who had previously exhausted benefits from before Dec. 26th to file for resumed benefits.
CDLE said, “Around 289,000 claimants who may be part of Phase Two have been emailed instructions for resuming benefits.”
All claims that are reopened will either backdate to Dec. 27th or to the last week a claimant received payment if their benefits resumed during Phase 1.
