Dhemaji/ Haridwar, Sep 03 (ANI): Two more deaths were reported from Assam even as situation remained grim in the flood-hit state. At least 18 people have died in the state due to floods. Sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the flood affected areas and assured help from the Central government. The Brahmaputra River and many of its tributaries have breached their banks after downpours, washing away thousands of homes mostly made of bamboo and straw, as well as roads, bridges and power lines. The floods have affected close to 9 lakh people in 1841 villages of 18 districts in the state. As many as 85,000 people have taken shelter in the 214 relief camps set up by the government. Meanwhile, the collapse of a canal flooded villages in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand. Several villagers fled their homes for safer havens as water entered their houses. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
