►When you're sitting still, your BMW has a fan that pulls air through the radiator to ensure it continues to keep the engine cool. The mechanical fan on older models like the E39 5-Series works well, but only as long as its clutch is in good health. It activates when the engine coolant reaches a certain temperature, but if worn or damaged, it won't engage, leaving your engine to overheat when not moving. Overheating can severely damage your engine, so fan clutch replacement must happen as soon as possible once the problem is identified.

It's quite easy to tell when the fan is working; it sounds as though it's trying to pull in enough air to cool a Mac truck. It'll kick in once coolant temps jump a bit over 190°, which is a bit over halfway on the temp sensor. If it doesn't kick on or comes on much earlier, there's an issue with the fan clutch that requires you to replace it.
