The BGMEA president called on the US government to consider reducing tariffs on ready-made garments in Bangladesh Faruk Hasan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), called on US brands and retailers to be more fair in terms of prices in order to build a safer global market.On Friday (September 10), the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC hosted "Rana Plaza Seven Years Later: Who's Doing What?" He made the call at a roundtable discussion on the subject.Farooq Hasan said, “Our factories are increasingly investing in security and sustainability. In addition, the cost of production has increased by 30% over the last five years. On the other hand, the price of our clothes is falling every year. Although prices cannot be set in a free market economy, no one can argue for lower prices to produce socially fair goods.He added, “The collaboration and partnership between the brand and our suppliers has helped us achieve tremendous growth. It will continue to grow tremendously in the future. Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States M Shahidul Islam gave a welcome address at the round table meeting. He highlighted the steps and initiatives taken by the Government of Bangladesh to support the garment industry in Bangladesh to ensure workplace safety and benefits to garment workers.
