1988 Shell Driver of the Year Race at Donnybrook Park circuit in Harare, Zimbabwe. The Shell Driver series was an open handicap championship run over the course of a season at Donnybrook and the Breedon Everard circuit in Bulawayo. Run as a 12 or 15 lap race at the end of each meeting the Shell race was invariably exciting as the faster cars starting at the back of the grid battled through the backmarkers, sometime having to lap the slower cars 4 or 5 times in the course of the event. The speed differential between the cars made the Shell race extremely dangerous but most drivers relished the challenge.
This race featured Richard Smith in the Marlboro Reynard on its last appearance in Zimbabwe, Mannie De Villiers in the Newlands Garage Van Diemen and Dave Tingle in the mighty Lyle Chevrolet.
