At least 11 people were killed on Thursday (March 20) when the Taliban launched a car bomb and gun attack at a police station in Jalalabad city in eastern Afghanistan.
According to AFP, the attack began with a mini-truck loaded with explosives which was detonated near the police station's entrance. The explosion was followed by Taliban assailants who launched gun assault at the police officers. Two other bombs, one hidden in a motorized rickshaw and a second one in a vegetable cart near the police station were also detonated remotely during the attack, Inquirer reported. Twenty-two people were also wounded in the attack.
The attack came ahead of the presidential election on April 5, and has demonstrated the insurgents determination to disrupt the vote, Reuters reported. Authorities said six Taliban assailants were shot dead by the police. The Taliban claimed responsibility in a text message sent to media.
