commentary: the united nations secretary general, kurt walheim, arrived in athens on monday (16/1) on the last lap of a tour to explore the chances of resuming the cyprus negotiations. waldheim met with the greek prime minister, constantine karamanlis, on monday night. bulent ecevit, the new turkish prime minister, has promised to produce proposals on both the territorial and constitutional aspects of the cyprus problem, if his government obtains a vote of confidence. waldheim will convey these proposals and act as mediator.
waldheim spoke to reporters after his 90-minute meeting with the greek premier and expressed his optimism for the talks to be resumed in the next two months.
waldheim speaks: the talks concentrated, as you can imagine, on the cyprus question, though we touched upon some other problems of the international situation. i informed the prime minister of my talks in ankara and in cyprus, and the prime minister gave me his views on the cyprus question. as you know, there is now a new situation; ankara has informed me that they will come out with proposals, concrete proposals, on the territorial question of cyprus as well as the various proposals on the constitutional aspect.
