The topic of this video is: Do You Continue To Solicit More Doctors?
Here is some of what is discussed in this video:
Charlie: Now I'm a little further down the line as the Head of HR, I have my good vision insurance company. Should a good vision insurance company keep after getting more doctors to help? I think you call it getting onto the panels.
I may have new employees, they may have different doctors. What should a vision insurance company do when it comes to getting more doctors as time goes on?
Daniel: They should continue to try to get more, if they don't have all doctors. No company is going to have everybody.
There is typically a department in place, maybe a provider relation, or even a department who specifically solicits and tries to grow the panel. Retail as well. Maybe you can add a few hundred at a time if there's a big retail chain or something of that nature.
For private practice doctors it should be ongoing outreach.
Charlie: You talked about some retail ones. We may be able to add them nationally from the insurance company standpoint and that my employees can participate with them?
Daniel: In a way it could be easier, just larger numbers. But, with private practice there should always be continuous outreach because you're not going to know every doctor out there. I'm sure there are doctors graduating every day and practices opening every day.
Charlie: What if my employee comes in and says, "I've been using Doctor A, but I just discovered Doctor B," and he comes to me as the Head of HR. Can I suggest that doctor to the insurance company to say, "See if you can get that doctor." What do I do at that point to get that doctor as part of the network?
Daniel: Make a call to your account manager, that would be one way. Some companies probably have a space to refer a doctor right on their website. Sometimes I've even seen paper, which is more old fashioned.
I would hope that most companies are willing to make an effort to bring a doctor on if they're not on there and they've been specifically requested.
Charlie: They should have a proactive program going on and getting doctors all the time.
Daniel: Correct.
Charlie: Then if in that local market somebody within my company says, "Hey, this is a good doctor, let's add this person," they can make the suggestion, they can refer a doctor to get the person on there.
Daniel: Yes. It's always up to the doctor, obviously. They're going to look at what the carrier reimburses and things of that nature. If it's a losing proposition for a doctor, they may not want to. Some doctors refuse to take any type of insurance.
Charlie: Some just want cash only.
Daniel: In the medical field they're starting to see more doctors do that, but that's a whole different story.
Charlie: It is a whole different story, but we know that we have to make sure that we have great customer service in the terrific vision insurance company so that we don't have to worry about that sort of thing.
I go to my dentist, for instance, and he has somebody on staff that does nothing but all the paperwork. I'm thinking, "No wonder he has to charge me more if he's doing all that."
I want to make sure that I can get in there to talk to somebody in my vision care if I have a question.
Daniel: Right. I still feel vision, all around, is easier for everybody. Hopefully the doctors and carriers still have a lot of to do and work with, but there should be less paperwork. I sometimes say thank God I'm in vision and not medical, especially these days.
Charlie: That would be pretty tough.
