The palace is closely linked to the Indian freedom movement as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu.

It is also the place where Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died.

Pune is at a distance of 200 km from Mumbai and is well connected by train and air from within and beyond the state of Maharashtra.

For transport within Pune auto rickshaws, buses and taxis are easily available.
