The UK has formally named its new polar research ship after legendary naturalist and BBC broadcaster David Attenborough. "Boaty McBoatface" was the winning name in an online poll to name the ship in 2016. As a consolation prize, the cheeky name was given to a small yellow underwater vehicle that forms part of the ship's research equipment. Operated by the publicly funded British Antarctic Survey, the ship is nearly 130m long and can break ice up to 1m thick,
at around 5.6 km/h. It will conduct ice trials in the northern hemisphere from March 2020.
