One of South Korea's two major nationwide umbrella labor unions has vowed to go on a general strike next week as its leader was detained by the police on charges of leading illegal, violent demonstrations.
Han Sang-Gyun, the head of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, was whisked away by police on Thursday at the main gate of Jogye Buddhist Temple in central Seoul.
He had been holed up since November 16, after presiding over a street rally to protest the government's labor reform scheme. The rally caused harsh clashes between demonstrators and police.
In response, the KCTU, which claims a membership of 670,000, held rallies across the nation later on Thursday, denouncing the police's move.
The KCTU also vowed to stage a general strike on December 16.
