There have been mixed reactions to the release yesterday of the fourth quarter crime statistics by the Minister of Police Bheki Cele. The stats reflect that there was a countrywide 3.4% increase in murder between January and March this year. Firearms are the most used instrument, with 842 used in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Gauteng 727 and 2 629 nationally. Minister Cele said the decision to intensify visible policing in all provinces is working and more financial resources would be allocated to combat murder and other contact crimes.
