It is customary for Chinese to use ingredients that represent good luck in our dishes during Chinese New Year in the hope that consuming them will bring us a wonderful year ahead. Each key ingredient that we use in the dish has a symbolic value. Abalone represents abundance and good fortune because of its shape, which is reminiscent of gold ingots, and abalone in Chinese sounds very similar to "guaranteed abundance". That's why abalones are frequently used in Chinese New Year recipes.
Even though you can buy braised abalones in a can, we prefer to cook them ourselves because they are relatively cheaper (about SGD1 each) when you buy them raw in Singapore and because they are easy to cook.
As full-time working adults, we understand how tough and time-consuming cooking can be. 4cm cinnamon bark 肉桂皮
Half a star anise 八角半个
10g rock sugar 冰糖
1 thumb-sized young ginger拇指大小的幼姜

Half a Knorr chicken stock cube

0.5L water 水
2 tbsps premium dark soy sauce 上等黑酱油
6 uncooked baby abalones 生鲍鱼
B: Yong Tau Fu
50g minced pork 猪肉碎
80g egg tofu 鸡蛋豆腐
50g fish paste 鱼浆
