You just finished a painting and it’s everything you’d hoped for. It couldn’t possibly get any better—could it? 😯
Ah, the eternal dilemma: to varnish, or not to varnish? 🖼️
For most of us, varnishing just makes sense. It enhances your painting's appearance and offers long-lasting protection for delicate oil and acrylic paint films. Unless you have top-notch home care or regular professional cleanings, varnishing ensures easy maintenance and vibrant longevity.
But which varnish to choose?
You want something that’s as clear as water to preserve the colors of the painting below. And it should be easily removable in the future, leaving the artwork untouched. As far as the finish, it’s
totally up to you. Gloss surfaces tend to saturate dry paint layers and add depth, while matte surfaces give a direct look but can lighten dark values.
Nothing in art is one-size-fits-all—just find what suits your style best.
