In 1962, World War III Nearly Started By a Russian Submarine.
On October 29th, 1962, US Navy ships detected the B-59 Russian submarine near Cuba and dropped depth charges around her. The crew onboard the submarine B-59 didn't know about the "NOTMAR" or notice to mariners. In "NOTMAR," the US told the Soviets that their navy ships would drop practice depth charges in order to signal the submarines to surface. On B-59, the order was issued to fire a nuclear-tipped torpedo to sink all 11 American ships around the submarine, including the carrier USS Randolph CV-15. But fortunately, this launch never took place as the torpedo was not assembled, and captain second class Vasili Arkhipov opposed this decision.
