Akash is a short to medium range Short Range Surface to Air Missile system which was produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Akash missile was developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to protect the areas which are vulnerable to aerial attacks.
The Akash Missile system can launch targets on aircraft up to 35 km away. Aerial targets like air-to-surface missiles, fighter jets, cruise missiles, etc. can be neutralized through this missile. This missile has a nearly 90 per cent kill probability. On firing the first missile of Akash, there is 88 per cent kill probability and 98.5 per cent for the second.
The first batch of the Akash missiles was inducted by the Indian Air Fore in May 2015. The first Akash missile was delivered to the IAF in March 2012. The missile was formally inducted into the IAF in July 2015.
The Indian Air Force ordered 1,000 Akash missiles and the Indian Army 2,000 missiles. The Indian Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) requested the army version of the Akash missile system in June 2010 in an order worth Rs125bn ($2.8bn).
