Dr. Joseph Mikhael, Chief Medical Officer of the International Myeloma Foundation, provided an informative overview of myeloma during an M-Power Community Workshop in Tampa. Myeloma, a blood cancer, originates in the bone marrow and primarily affects plasma cells responsible for producing antibodies. Patients with myeloma often experience fatigue, pain, and anemia. Dr. Mikhael highlighted the significant advancements in myeloma treatments, including various drug classes, immunomodulatory drugs, and innovative therapies such as CAR T-cell therapy. The M-Power program strives to change the course of myeloma in the African-American community.
