Three US-based chemists have jointly been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Moungi Bawendi from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Louis Brus from Columbia University and Alexei Ekimov, who works at Nanocrystals Technology, won the award for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots. They are nanoparticles that are so small that their size determines their properties. Nanoparticles and quantum dots are used in LED lights and TV-screens, and can also be used to guide surgeons while removing cancer tissue.
