It’s very easy to do the hang sun-optimally.
Faults usually centre around hanging from the board too soon and not achieving a take-off drive (hold of free leg parallel or just above after leaving the board).
Then the swing leg’s lower leg is not pushed forward of the knee before being swept down long and behind the hips into the classic “banana” shaped hang.
The arms must also push through at take-off as a continuation of the running stride - many jumpers will pull their arms back too soon. This stunts the take-off drive and prevents that essential drive from the board. This can add 20-30cm.
If the above mistakes are avoided and the technique tips above adhered to then it is possible that the hang can be a very effective flight technique.
Very often I see jumpers hanging straight away at take-off and over rotating.
As will all long jump techniques the take-off is crucial as is the set-up and you can see that we are using mats to achieve the required positions.
The final three steps are crucial and they must be active and correctly positioned.
