(21 Apr 1977) On Thursday (April 21) the Basque Nationalist Party held its first general meeting since it was legalised. Between seven and ten thousand people gathered at the Sports Palace in Bilbao to discuss their party's platform for the June fifteenth general election.
Another two to three thousand people who were unable to get into the meeting hall listened to the speeches from outside the sports palace. the mood seemed to be one of happy optimism, with the traditional "v for victory" sign very evident. A general strike shut down the docks in the large port of Bilbao. cranes and other equipment sat idle, and many ships waited to load and unload as the dock workers protested against dismissals of other workers.
