Medieval maps were more a work of art rather than scientific tools and they all had one aspect in common - the ocean was a giant question mark. No one knew what lay beneath the depths of the ocean. Cartographers littered the sea with monstrous creatures that lurked in uncharted waters.
Surprisingly, our oceans would stay that way until the 1950s. But, why?
