(6 May 1978) The younger son of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, received various convictions arising out of about twenty cases against him for alleged illegal activities and excesses during the state of emergency imposed by his mothers government in the last two years of her Premiership. Sanjay Gandhi was then one of the most powerful figures in India. A two-year sentence was also given to his co-accused, the former Information and Broadcasting Minister, Vidya Charan Shukla.
