STORYLINE
America's top military commander made an unannounced trip to the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Monday, where where ethnic and sectarian tension is running high.
Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, was met by Kirkuk police commander General Jamal Taher.
Later he held a meeting with the city's Kurdish mayor and governor, Abdul Rahman Mustafa.
Kurds want to make Kirkuk the capital of their autonomous region in the north, despite Arab opposition.
Travelling with Mullen in Iraq was Bob Woodruff, with the US television network ABC, who was returning to Iraq for the first time since suffering a serious brain injury from a roadside bomb blast in January 2006.
