“Five years ago, the EU [European Union] decided to trap migrants and asylum seekers in five centers on the Greek islands to solve the so-called “migration crisis,” says Reem Mussa, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) humanitarian advisor on migration. “In fact, the EU created a crisis that they continue to recycle today.” The EU’s migration policies put the health, wellbeing, and safety of people trapped on the Greek islands in jeopardy. People who have survived violence and hardship are stuck in appalling conditions with a lack of information on their legal status and are subjected to harsh border and asylum procedures.
MSF released a report on June 9, 2021 on the devastating impact of EU migration policies. We are calling on EU leaders to completely change their approach to migration instead of doubling down on their existing containment and deterrence policies.
