Welcome to Paper like a Pro! In this episode, Resene Wallpaper Professional Ingel Janssen guides you through the process of hanging wallpaper.
Gone are the days when wallpapering a room required faffing about pasting strips of wallpaper laid out on a trestle table before dangling soggy paper against the wall. The latest paste-the-wall designs are much easier to hang than their flower power predecessors and even better, the Resene Wallpaper Collection is full of trend-forward modern designs.
You will need the following:
• Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner (if you have painted walls)
• Lint-free cloth
• Resene EzyFill Quick
• PAL putty knife
• PAL sanding block
• 80 grit sandpaper
• Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer
• Paint pail
• Roller handle
• Roller pole
• Resene #1 Dacron roller sleeve
• Paintbrush
• Resene drop cloth
• ShurStik Wallpaper Size
• Bucket
• Stepladder
• Resene wooden paint stirrer
• Water
• Wallpaper brush
• Pencil
• Plumbline
• PAL #2 Polyblend roller sleeve
• Beeline Ready To Use Wallpaper Adhesive
• Wallpaper
• Rubber press seam roller
• Straight edge tool
• Craft knife
• Sponge
Step-by-step instructions:
1. If you’re dealing with a painted wall, you’ll need to clean the entire surface using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and a lint-free cloth.
2. Fill any cracks or holes with Resene EzyFill Quick. Allow to dry, then sand back with 80 grit sandpaper and wipe away sanding dust.
3. Whether your wall is painted or unpainted, you will need to seal the surface with Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer. Once the sealer has cured, give the surface a light sand with 80 grit sandpaper and wipe away sanding dust.
4. Mix ShurStik Wallpaper Size with water (5 litres of water per 100g of granulated size), stirring well so that there are no lumps in the mixture. Using a wallpaper brush, apply a coat of size to the surface of the wall and allow it to fully dry before applying any wallpaper.
5. Using a pencil and a plumbline, make a straight line so that you can hang your first drop of wallpaper to this reference.
6. Apply a 2mm-thick layer of Beeline Ready To Use Wallpaper Adhesive onto the wall using a PAL #2 Polyblend roller sleeve. You can check your paste thickness by making a ‘Z’ pattern with your finger in the paste.
7. The moment you’ve been waiting for – let’s hang some wallpaper! Align your wallpaper to the plumbline already marked and smooth out any bubbles using a rubber press seam roller. Cut the top and bottom using a craft knife and a straight edge tool.
8. Repeat steps six and seven for the remaining sheets of wallpaper.
9. Wipe down the wallpapered wall with a sponge and water making sure to remove any paste residue.
10. Stand back and admire your handy work.
Hanging wallpaper is easier than ever, and is a great way to give your space a new look without waiting for paint to dry. Go on, give it a go!
