Did she need FAI surgery? In 2016, Bonnie had a sudden, severe bout of hip pain. She was unable to walk and unable to work. She was unable to play hockey or do any of her normal activities. As a medical professional (nurse practitioner), she consulted with friends and trusted colleagues to help her figure out what to do about her hip pain.
An orthopedist told her she had femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and that she was going to need surgery if she ever tried to play hockey again, regardless of whether or not she did physical therapy. He told her that the only way to fix hip impingement was surgery.
With previous extensive experience in orthopedic surgery settings, she was skeptical if she could avoid surgery given how severe her hip pain was. She did research on FAI surgery, and she didn’t like the odds of success. She wanted to try something less invasive before going the surgical route.
After a few months of carefully structured training at Upright Health, she was able to fix her hip impingement pain and get back to hockey in 8-10 weeks. She’s now able to play hockey, ride her bike, and do more than she used to before her initial run-in with hip impingement.
