Literary Theory & Criticism – Death of the Author Explained.
Death of the author is one of the most famous essays written by Roland Barthes. It makes Barthes’ transformation from structuralist mode of thinking to the post-structuralist. In this video I have explained and simplified the essay ‘Death of the Author’. Video explains the essay paragraph by paragraph starting with the question of ‘Who wrote Shakespeare’ and ending with the birth of reader.
The central argument of the essay is that, we, as reader, should not focus much on the Authorial intent, rather we have to find the interpretation of our own. Barthes says that the emergence of the author is a product of capitalism, for Barthes Author is a mere scriptor or a writer, who simply puts together the words and produces literature. Therefore, the meaning of the text does not depend on the Scriptor, but on the reader.
