Gold is a fabulous material to work with but it is expensive, and prices have risen by 70% in the last five years alone 📈
It’s also a LOT more pricey than silver…
🥈10g of Sterling Silver today will cost you around £7 ($9 USD)
🥇10g of Gold will set you back £613 ($805 USD)
But if you still want to get that yellow glow on your pieces without having to pay a fortune for materials, there are some alternatives!
✨ Gold Filled - this is high quality jeweller’s brass that has been bonded with a coating of at least 5% (or 1/20th) of solid gold by weight
✨ Gold Vermeil - this is sterling silver which has been plated in a thick layer of gold (at least 2 microns)
✨ Gold Plated - the cheapest option, this is a base metal such as copper or brass which has a very thin layer of gold on the outside
These can all vary in price and the way you work with them may involve some limitations - especially when soldering 🔥
But they are much more affordable options than solid gold and a great way to start adding it to your designs 🙌
Let me know if you’ve tried any of these before, and if you have any tips or advice for using them please share them in the comments! ⬇️
With love,
