OK. Let's cut straight to the chase. Here at the Fit Father Project, we've been fascinated by the question: does cryotherapy work for weight loss?
So... we decided to dig into the research to find out the truth, and what we discovered shocked us.
It all comes back to this strange phenomenon called "Cold Thermogenesis" where our bodies actually *increase* our metabolic rate in response to cold exposure.
See, one of our body's key goals is to maintain a stable core temperature. All of our body's vital organs (heart, lungs, liver, etc.) require a stable internal core temperature too.
It's kind of like the "Goldilocks principle." Our bodies like it "not too cold, not too hot... but just right."
Now when we're exposed to short-term cold stress... our bodies adapt. We shiver, which is our bodies' way of generating heat from small muscle contractions.
AND... our bodies cellular powerhouses (called mitochondria) begin to increase the expression of a special protein called UCP1 which helps to generate heat, burn calories, and raise our core temperature to keep us alive.
So, when answering does cryotherapy work for fat loss... the short answer is: YES.
But the real question is... HOW MUCH does cryotherapy work for weight loss? How big is the effect? And how does the effect compare to following a healthy diet and workout routine?

Here is one take-home message. For our bodies, heat = metabolism.
When we die, our bodies turn cold - largely because our metabolism stops. Key enzymes can't function if we get too cold. This is why we can literally "freeze to death."
Thankfully, safe cryotherapy (short-term cold exposure) won't kill you. But cryotherapy may burn fat and cryotherapy works for weight loss.
