On the 31st of July 2021, Steamrail Victoria were planned to run their Eureka Express tour to Ballarat from Melbourne with return using locomotives R711 and R761. Due to the 2 week lockdown in Victoria in days prior the train wasn’t able to run due to passenger limits. Using the path and timetable they had been given by V/line, SRV used the opportunity to run a driver training train with V/line. The train consisted of steam locomotive R761 as well as 2 V/Line H set passenger cars, a total of 6 passenger carriages. A steam locomotive has not hauled a V/line train with passenger cars since 1998 making this the first time in 23 years of a V/Line and SRV driver training run.
In the morning R761 ran light engine to southern cross and then coupled up to the carriages. It ran to Ballarat making a stop for around an hour at Ballan to cross 2 regular V/Line services before getting to Ballarat and was turned around on the turntable at the Ballarat East Depot.
