A couple of news reporters from the great state of North Carolina made news themselves for falling victim to unemployment fraud
WRAL’s Monica Laliberte and Brian Shrader recently had their identities stolen, which scammers used to collect unemployment benefits.
These two newscasters that typically report the news of unemployment fraud are among the thousands of people that have been defrauded of $11 million since March.
Pryor Gibson, head of the North Carolina Division of Employment Security, stated: "It seems like every time we put a tool in place to help prevent fraud and identity theft, the criminals find a way to work around, and we ended up having to add another layer.”
Hopefully North Carolina can recoup some of these unemployment benefits, and scammers, please don’t come after me for unemployment benefits, I’m just the messenger.
Meanwhile, a recent Q&A from the great state of New Jersey brought up an interesting predicament regarding 401(K) and unemployment benefits.
According to nj.com, a woman explained that her husband was out of work for months, did not collect unemployment benefits, but did take out a loan from his 401(K).
Now that he is collecting unemployment benefits, the state is demanding that money be taken out of his 401(K) to fund his benefits.
According to Karin Price Mueller: “Under the CARES Act, you can take funds from your 401(k) of up to $100,000 or 100% of your vested account balance.”
But since they took out a loan, and not early withdrawal, they might need to contact their 401(K) provider to get it sorted out.
She explained: “Is it possible that on the unemployment application that you incorrectly listed the 401(k) withdrawal as income for the year?” she said. “If not, any loan or distribution from your 401(k) should have no impact on unemployment eligibility.”
The bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus unveiled their 2 new stimulus packages yesterday, which includes a $748 billion disaster relief bill, containing 16 weeks of federal $300 extended enhanced unemployment benefits.
The bill will not be retroactive, with unemployment benefits lasting from December 26th until April 19th.
Fortunately, this new stimulus package does extend the life of the PUA and PEUC programs, which offer unemployment benefits for non-UI claimants, and 13 extra weeks of state payments, respectfully.
With both Republican and Democratic support for this $748 billion stimulus package, these vital unemployment benefits could be signed into law later this week along with the government’s CR bill.
While I’d love to see payment above $300 weekly, this new stimulus bill will help millions of Americans receive much needed disaster relief funds as we head into 2021.
If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, get in the system before the new stimulus package is approved to ensure your benefits.
Just go to your state’s PUA or UI website, show them your employment history, and explain that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there.
For your troubles, you could be eligible to receive a backdated unemployment check for up to $20,000!
For all of the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers, by telling the truth and being honest, you could be eligible for PUA funds.
But don’t miss out on your chance to receive these amazing government unemployment benefits, which expire before December 31st.
