Video tutorial on how to knit the Trellis stitch (level: advanced beginner or intermediate). This is a traditional stitch pattern that is knit on a multiple of 4 stitches + 2 and is an 8-row repeat. You will need regular knitting needles and a cable needle (of the same size or close) for this stitch.
Abbreviations: C2F=cable 2 front; K=knit; K2tog=knit 2 stitches together; K2YO=knit twice into the double-yarn over; P=purl; SKP=slip 1 stitch purlwise, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over; st=stitch; YO=yarn over.
Notes:
C2F=transfer 1 st from left-hand needle onto the cable needle, then knit the next stitch, then transfer the st on cable needle back to left-hand needle and then knit it.
K2YO=knit into front of the first loop of the double-yarn over (done in previous row), then without dropping the st, knit again into the back of the second loop of the double-yarn over, then drop both sts (note: you don't really increase or decrease any sts here; just knitting 2 sts from the 2 sts of the double-yarn over).
Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches + 2 (eg, 18 or 26 or 34, etc; for swatches shown in video, I cast on 30 sts with US size 7 [4.5 mm] for the red swatch and US size 9 [5.5 mm] for pink swatch).
Row 1 (right side): K1, YO, *SKP, K2tog, YO twice. Repeat from * until last 5 sts, then SKP, K2tog, YO, K1
Row 2 (wrong side): K2, P2, *K2YO, P2. Repeat from * until last 2 sts, then K2
Row 3: K1, P1, *C2F, P2. Repeat from * until last 4 sts, then C2F, P1, K1.
Row 4: K2, *P2, K2. Repeat from * until end of row
Row 5: K1, K2tog, *YO twice, SKP, K2tog. Repeat from * until last 3 sts, then YO twice, SKP, K1
Row 6: K1, P1, K2YO, *P2, K2YO. Repeat from * until last 2 sts, then P1, K1
Row 7: K2, *P2, C2F. Repeat from * until last 4 sts, then P2, K2
Row 8: K1, P1, K2, *P2, K2. Repeat from * until last 2 sts, then P1, K1
Repeat these 8 rows for the pattern. Once the work is finished, ending in Row 8, cast off using regular cast off method (or any cast of method of your choice).
I don't have a project for this yet, but this stitch can be used for a variety of projects such as scarves/cowls, blankets, and shawls/afghans. Before starting a project for this stitch, I would suggest making a small swatch to obtain gauge: first, cast on 14 sts with yarn and needle of your choice (for worsted weight/medium yarns, suggest using US needle sizes 7 [4.5 mm] or higher). Then, do the 8-row pattern till work measures at least a couple inches and then measure width of the piece. If the 14 sts gives you a width of say 2 inches and if you wish to knit a scarf that is say 6 inches in width (ie, 6/2 = 3), you will need three times the number of stitches you originally cast on: so, 3 x 14 = 42 sts.
Also, I highly recommend using proactive lifelines when knitting any project with this lace stitch (link to video on proactive lifelines: [ Ссылка ]).
