A highly requested video of common reef species you will likely encounter while diving/spearfishing/snorkelling in South Australia 🐠🤿🐟
If you are going to be SPEARFISHING, please make sure you first familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations. It vital to conduct yourself in the appropriate manner, as the reality is people often see spearguns and assume the worst.
Although most of these fish don’t have a legal size or bag limit, it doesn’t mean you can just go out and smash them. Please still respect them and take only what you need. Spearos take a lot of pride in their selective nature and sustainability of the sport. When you put on a wetsuit you represent the whole spearfishing community, so please do the right thing!
Also, I purposely didn’t make many comments on how the fish taste, as I believe taste is subjective and everyone should explore their own preference regardless of what others say. Shoot and eat what you enjoy eating. All the fish listed in this video are edible, as a matter of fact majority of the species in SA are edible, despite what people say. I believe that it is important as spearos that we take a variety of different species to decrease the pressure and impact we have on the so called, ‘desired’ species.
It is unlikely that when starting out you are not going to be able to identify every species you see, best practice would be to leave any species you cannot 100% identify. However, I understand when you are new and see a new special you feel the urge to shoot it. Therefore general rule of thumb I would advise is DO NOT shoot anything that does not look over 30cm and DO NOT shoot any Blue Groper or Pink Snapper as they are currently protected in most parts of the state. By following this, it should protect you from doing anything illegal. Lastly, DO NOT shoot anything you don’t plan on eating. Note, fish will always appear bigger underwater so when starting out I would recommend measuring the fish you catch and take a mental note of how it looked underwater so that in the future you have a rough gauge of how a 30cm+ fish should look like underwater. Happy spearing and stay safe 🙂
