Dr. Flowers was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended the Pennsylvania State University, where he graduated with honors in 1980. He graduated from medical school at the Hahnemann University of the Health Sciences with honors in 1984 and moved to Baltimore, Maryland for his surgical training. He completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Maryland and was the first ever Fellow in Surgical Laparoscopy and Endoscopy there.

After completing surgical training, Dr. Flowers remained on the faculty at the University of Maryland for 13 years, where he directed the nationally recognized Surgical Laparoscopy and Endoscopy fellowship and established one of the first Minimally Invasive Surgery centers in the United States.

Dr. Flowers has published more than 100 articles on the subject of laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgical procedures, and has taught flexible endoscopy and advanced laparoscopy to hundreds of surgeons in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

At present Dr. Flowers is the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where he joined the surgical staff in 2006. His practice interests center around complex gastrointestinal surgery, advanced laparoscopic procedures, and abdominal wall reconstruction. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of several specialty societies.

In his spare time, Dr. Flowers enjoys football, physical fitness, travel, and spending time with his family.
