(7 Oct 2016) Negotiators for the Colombian Government and the leftist guerrillas of the FARC called on the United Nations Friday to implement the monitoring and verification process for a bilateral ceasefire agreed upon last month.
While the peace accords signed were rejected by voters last week, important provisions like the ceasefire and cessation of hostilities will remain in effect as both sides try to salvage the peace accords.
The Colombian government pledged to seek out and listen to those who opposed the peace plan, and the FARC says it will continue to work with the government to find a resolution to the impasse.
But modifying the intricate peace accords, hammered out over four arduous years, will be difficult and contentious, with the FARC declaring the final agreement is legally binding and must be respected.
Both sides praised and congratulated President Juan Manuel Santos for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for pursuing the peace accords, and expressed hope the prize will help find a path to a peace agreement acceptable to the Colombian people.
