One of Cicero’s greatest miscalculations was his belief that he could control Octavian. After Julius Caesar’s assassination, Cicero saw Octavian, Caesar’s heir, as a means to destroy Marc Antony and restore senatorial control. He believed that Octavian’s youth and inexperience made him easy to manipulate. But Cicero underestimated Octavian’s ambition and political acumen. While Cicero publicly supported Octavian, Octavian was already planning his own path to power. Once Antony and Octavian formed the Second Triumvirate, Cicero realized too late that he had been outmaneuvered. Octavian’s rise to power was a clear sign that Cicero had fundamentally misunderstood the political landscape.
