The “Jua Kali” sector in Kenya is an entire industry comprising small scale traders and artisans who work on the roadside, renowned for their ability to create almost anything on demand.
A major problem facing the Jua kali industry almost everywhere in Kenya is the constant fire outbreaks destroying merchandise worth millions of shillings. Nairobi's Gikomba has had a fair share of these fires. Jua kali workers also endure harassment by more well-connected, powerful business rivals.
Jua kali means literally 'hot sun' and is the local name given to groups of people who work with metal and wood for a living.
