Excessive build-up of fluid can cause swelling in your face, ankles, feet, and hands. Reduce pain and swelling and get back to your normal activities.
Step 1: Take a break
If the swelling is related to an sport or activity you're engaged in, take a break from it for at least a few days.
Tip
In general, if your legs or feet are swollen, avoid standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
Step 2: Elevate
Lie down, and use pillows to elevate the swollen area so that it is higher than your heart.
Step 3: Apply ice
Once you're lying down, apply ice to the swollen area.
Step 4: Talk to your doctor
Make an appointment with a doctor, and talk to them about medicines you can take and exercises you can do to encourage blood flow and help reduce swelling.
Step 5: Lower sodium
Lower your sodium and caffeine intake. Add more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet and avoid foods high in fat. Drink plenty of fluids.
Step 6: Keep skin cool
Keep your skin cool when you are in a hot environment. Stay in locations that are air conditioned or relax in a pool. You'll feel better in no time.
