Passengers are noticing the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is much more empty than usual, as many people avoid traveling due to the new coronavirus.
"You have just these big long areas where people are usually snaking through and you just walk up to check in. It's a real different feeling," said Dave Klassen, who was waiting to fly home Wednesday to San Antonio, Texas.
An advisory on the airport's web page noted that the facility continues to operate, "but it is not business as usual right now." Currently the airport is averaging about 16,000 passengers a day. That's down from an average of 50,000 passengers traveling through security checkpoints during the spring break travel season a year ago, according to the statement. The statement also said the airport is open with "enhanced disinfection and personal hygiene protocols in place."
Klassen admitted that he would rather not travel right now, but he felt that he had to go to his father's funeral.
"I had a brother in San Francisco who chose not to. And respect that. Nobody throwing rocks at somebody making a decision like that," he added.
