Climate activist Greta Thunberg joined thousands of demonstrators as they gathered in the western German town of Luetzerath to protest the expansion of a coal mine.
“The carbon is still in the ground. We are still here. Luetzerath is still here. And as long as the carbon is in the ground, the struggle is not over,” Thunberg said Saturday.
The protest in Luetzerath comes after the evacuation of the village, which climate activists have occupied for almost two years in an attempt to stop the expansion of an opencast lignite mine by German energy company RWE.
The German government had allowed the energy giant to demolish Luetzerath on the condition the company would bring its exit from coal production forward to 2030 from 2038.
