This session aims to stimulate an interactive discussion about using immersive learning and dialogic teaching in elementary social studies classrooms to cultivate civic reasoning and citizenship during polarized social and political times. The session will focus on an approach that is designed to immerse students in critical social events as witnesses and participants. Classroom dialogue is augmented by technological tools to affect both the students’ minds (abilities to think through and discuss difficult problems faced by underserved groups) and hearts (developing a caring and empathic approach to problem solving). Attendees will be invited to discuss this innovative approach and the possibilities it holds moving forward.
