Nicolás Maduro was formally declared the winner of Venezuela's disputed presidential election on July 29. The National Electoral Council declared Maduro's victory, handing him a third six-year term. Venezuelan opposition leaders also claimed victory in the presidential elections. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado claimed that Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia was the elected president. Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Caracas to express their discontent with Maduro's victory in the presidential election. Protesters burned barricades, blocked roads and banged pots and pans in various neighbourhoods, accusing Maduro of fraud. President Maduro said his govt knows how to deal with the nationwide anti-govt protest and that he knows how to “defeat the violent.” UN, the US, the European Union and several Latin American countries called for a "transparent" process, while allies, including China, Russia and Cuba, congratulated Maduro.
