Politicians are famously inaccessible unless they are campaigning. Meet the young professionals who are opening doors to let doers into the system. One look at her resume would lead you to believe that Rwitwika Bhattacharya-Agarwal works in an upscale financial services firm in Manhattan. This Harvard Business School graduate has worked with the United Nations and with World Bank. But you are more likely to spot the 26-year-old in a dusty, nondescript town in rural India, gradually putting into action the economic schemes designed by her team at Swaniti.
Swaniti, started in 2009, is Rwitwika’s baby. The members of this New Delhi-based NGO seek to work closely with forward-thinking politicians in their constituencies to implement and administer schemes. “The onus of bringing about improvement in our country shouldn’t be on politicians alone,” she explains.
So far, Swaniti has had the opportunity to work with 14 MPs and MLAs by going into their constituencies and bring about changes at the grass-roots level. The programmes they have worked on range from launching microfinance projects to infant healthcare programmes to strengthening government school curriculums to advocating for clean water. “Currently, we are working with PD Rai (MP, Gangtok), Kalikesh Singh Deo (MP, Bolangir) and Vandana Chavan (Rajya Sabha MP, Maharashtra),” she says. Politicians in India are notorious for being inaccessible. But the credentials of Swaniti’s members—Harvard and IIM graduates, doctors, architects, bankers—seem to open doors. “Besides, which politician wouldn’t want to be elected again on the basis of good work done in her or his constituency?” asks Rwitwika, with a smile.
PLUNGING INTO POLITICS
Wondering how to approach the right person in the political setup after setting up Swaniti in 2009, the members hit upon an idea. “We saw an opportunity to reach out to progressive MPs who had a known track record for development, through Fellowships,” she explains. The Swaniti Fellowships offer qualified youth the opportunity to engage in governance by launching them in constituency development work. Fellows work directly with MPs, MLAs or cabinet ministers on specific assignments.
