49 Japanese Black Pines in one video? Eric shares tips on decandling and wiring a flat of pines in their third growing season to create more robust growth. The plants are in 2" x 2" x 3" containers, nestled into an Anderson flat to keep the bottoms from drying out too quickly.
00:01:24 The purpose of decandling JBP (and some other pines) - it's a heavy cutback method that causes a tree to stop getting larger and start getting smaller and finer.
00:02:48 Eric demonstrates two different operations. First, cutting of the main trunk extension, and second, decandling behind the node which forces budding from pairs of needles.
00:04:20 This technique is not for growing big trees - Eric uses this technique for shohin and mame. This process stops the plant from making wood for the rest of the year and causes it to send out smaller, finer growth.
00:05:47 Detailed explanation of why Eric cuts a branch as well as decandles.
00:06:08 Great Scott! A Scot's pine is mixed in the flat. Eric started a bunch of these from seeds from Northern Ireland.
00:07:02 Eric explains that with young trees in development, you have a choice between speed of growth, or character.
00:09:00 Decandling at the node, advice re. catching all the buds.
00:10:24 49 trees decandled and done! Why Eric decandles above the node with weaker younger plants.
00:11:27 Wiring time! Using 3mm aluminum wire, Eric demonstrates wiring for pretty tight movement, which he wants in these small trees.
00:12:30 close-up of wiring process. It's a bit mesmerizing, isn't it?
00:14:37 49 trees wired and done! For some of these trees, Eric will use this cutback process as preliminary to growing them out to have bigger sized trunks. He explains how he'll do that. The rest will be potted down to small pots as shohin or mame.
