Collagraphs are a type of printmaking in which textured materials are glued to a flat surface to create a raised design. Gelli plates and chin cole are two common materials used in collagraphs. Gelli plates are made of gelatin, and they can be used to create a variety of textures. Chin Cole is a type of paper made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. It is also very versatile and can be used to create both smooth and rough surfaces. To create a collagraph, the artist first applies a layer of gelli or chin cole to the printing plate. Next, they add additional layers of material to build up the texture of the design. Once the design is complete, the artist applies ink to the plate and runs it through a printing press. The resulting print will have a unique, textured appearance.
