The 12th-century Helmsley Castle was built on a rocky outcrop near the River Rye and the market town of Helmsley grew up around it. Now in ruins, except for an Elizabethan-era house (Tudor period), what remains gives some idea how impressive this castle was. The East Tower is tall enough to be seen for miles around. It is now an English Heritage site in the North York Moors National Park and well worth a visit. The visitor centre offers audio guides which helps visitors know what they are seeing. You can truly get a feel for what this castle was during medieval times until the Civil War, a home.
